I spent 6 hours in a bar watching Argentina vs. Nigeria and US vs. England...I would like to give my tips to westerns (specifically American) on how not to act in a bar when you're an expat...
1. Don't walk in front of the screen during the game. Unlike the US, people love soccer and split second goals are not something we won't to miss because you decided you wanted to see if their was space on the opposite side of the room.
2. Don't boo during the national anthem...I am blame some English expats for this also. Yes, the US and England hate each other but at least show some respect for each other and yourself.
3. Refrain from dropping the f-bomb...you just sound ignorant and it's not cool.
4. Turn the volume down a few decibels..it's a bar not the launch of a space shuttle.
5. Maybe just refrain from chatting to your buddies...if you come to a bar at 3 am and it's full of soccer fans...guess what? watch soccer, if you want to chat go outside...or better yet to a bar that isn't catering to world cup soccer
6. It's not really that cool to discuss how drunk you get or how every weekend you stay out until the sun comes up...keep those conversations to yourself...and I know your discussing it with your friends, but chances are they were there
7. Keep the beer in your cup and not on someone's jersey. If you can't have a beer without spilling it you need to stop drinking
8. Stop trying to fight people, it's not cool and no one cares what you have to prove (and Iranian men don't like being called the b word)
9. Don't say "I don't really like soccer"...if you don't stay home, don't come because "everyone else is doing it"...soccer fans enjoy the game so leave the extra space for them
10. Don't fall asleep at a game...again leave the extra space for an actual fan
11. Enjoy the game, world cup is when the world comes together. Don't be stupid if you want to get drunk, fight and then pass out, stay at home.
